Sharell, Casey and I decided to do three posts and rotate ideas. The one I'm starting with is what I would do if I won the lottery. Be cause the lottery jackpot varies so much in amount and that amount makes all the difference in your decisions I decided to do it for a few different sized jackpots. I'm refraining from using the actual values of these list items on purpose.

$1,000,000

  • Clear my family's and my debts and obligations.
  • Have Mom and Dad retire as soon as possible
  • Set aside money for Kori to get her bachelor's.
  • Increase all families insurances - health, homeowners, auto . . .
  • Remodel SB house kitchen (Expand and include: better stove, island, sink, dishwasher, garbage disposal, better lighting and cupboard space)
  • Buy Mom, Dad, Kori, and Sharell better cars and drop some money into mine.
  • Give to the DPEA - donate machine for "gearing up" challenge
  • Give to the CP Machine Shops - sponsor a student technician
  • Plan a trip for my family.
  • Plan a trip for my friends.
  • Put aside some money each year to use towards doing things on my bucket list - this has a high priority on doing things with friends and family and is where I include their wants and needs in one bullet
  • Buy for myself: smartphone, desktop computer, laptop, sweet roadbike, snowboard, TV, and PS3
  • Invest and save the rest (with the advice of financial advisers) with enough freedom to have fun but not enough to get me in trouble
  • Random acts of financial generosity (buying groceries for strangers, clothing and blankets for homeless)

$10,000,000

  • All items from $1M list and (*or instead of if applicable):
  • Create an endowment to help fund DPEA*
  • Create an endowment to pay for (some) student technicians at CP Project Centers*
  • Buy myself a new car and motorcycle (G35 and Yamaha R6)
  • Plan a trip for extended family
  • Throw a PHAT party.
  • Remodel SB house (4 Bed, 4 Bath, 2 Car garage at least)*
  • Buy a house somewhere I want to live - probably SLO so I could rent it out if I didn't live there.
  • Hire personal assistant, personal trainer, a great lawyer, a good doctor, and financial adviser as mentioned before - all part time of course.

$50,000,000

  • All items from $10M list and (*or instead of if applicable):
  • Create an endowment to pay for all student technicians at the CP Project Centers
  • Hire a team (on contract, not indefinitely) to plan a new CENG project center.
  • Pay to fix machines and buy supplies for the project centers.
  • Help start an Engineering Academy at SLO high
  • Give to the KhanAcademy
  • Add to my car collection - it's a big list that I don't want to put in this post.
  • Buy neighbors to the right and behind of San Roque house and build a sick place with pool, guest house, and lots of extras like game, theater, reading, workout, animal rooms.
  • Buy a piece of land and build a burger joint, drive in theater, bowling alley, roller rink, 1/8th mile drag strip combo and make it cheap to use.
  • Look into buying more property in places like Tahoe, Mammoth, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Orlando, Scandinavia, South America

$100,000,000

  • Build the CENG Projects Center
  • Build a SLO High Engineering Academy Building
  • Try to start clean energy companies like solar and wind farms
  • Invest in people's new ideas

With each increase in amount of money the list of stuff to buy can grow but ultimately the end goals are increasing the ways that money works for you (making more money off the money you already have - which becomes increasingly easier as you have more) so that you can put that money to good use in more ways for your fellow man. So I would:

  1. Invest in things I think are important in order to get more money.
  2. Use earned money to benefit all man kind as best as I can
  3. Make sure myself and others still have tons of fun with our time on earth.

My Favorite Websites

Reddit.com
Reddit is a website where its entire content is generated by its users. Any user can make a "subreddit" about anything they want and any user can post in any subreddit they wish. There is something for everyone on reddit, I particularly like the pics, funny, motorcycles, nba, earthporn, machineporn, engineering, and todayilearned subreddits. Users can upvote or downvote posts and comments thus sending the best content to the front page where it is most viewable.

KhanAcademy.org
One of my passions is our education system. This has grown from my ability to see the larger picture of systems engineering and not accepting the status quo. I am a huge proponent of open source content and I want to help the movement to make education free and accessible to everyone on earth. One of the best tools I have seen to do this is KhanAcademy. I have 85,000 energy points and counting. I have spent most of my time on statistics, finance, and calculus but one day I hope to have completed the whole academy. Furthermore I would like to make videos on mechanical and manufacturing engineering subjects of my own.

Mint.com
This was one of the greatest gifts Sharell has ever given to me. Boy oh boy was I in need of this. I don't use it to it's full potential but it helps me keep an eye on spending nonetheless. If you don't track your spending or plan your budget, you need to make an account today.

TED.com
Like the History channel? What about the discovery Channel? If you like to hear about cool things from smart people you should bookmark TED. They hold conferences where the leaders of our age discuss their specialties with the world. The talks are often engaging and ensightful, tackling the big issues of today and tomorrow.

Youtube.com

It has become more than just videos of cats and people falling down. People actually make a very comfortable living being vloggers, artists, and professional reviewers on youtube. I come here for the other part of my news and entertainment when I need to get away from reddit. My favorite channels are sxephil, destorm, cgpgrey, behind those three are expertvilliage, kinagrannis, kevjumba, and kassemg.

Dropbox.com
Ever forget that report or need to print out your resume but don't have your flashdrive? Dropbox is free online data storage which allows you to share folders and files with others easily. Watch the video!

Gmail/Google Calendar
I love google for many reasons - their sense of humor, their ambition, their ingenuity, their opensource environment to name a few - and the two tools I love most are their email client and their calendar tool. It is my opinion that there is not a better duo out there, especially with the direction technology is going. I have my emails automatically filtered, labelled, and sorted based on priority. I have dozens of calendars that

Fitocracy.com
I came across fitocracy a year or more ago I believe and really wanted to do it but had forgotten the name of the website. After many fruitless google searches I gave up searching for this fitness tracking/social networking site. Earlier this month Sharell shared it with me and I was stoked to come across it once again. Since then I have been logging my runs and bikes to school and gotten a few of my friends to join.

Blogger.com
I wish I was better about updating this blog. I think once I get a steady job and predictable routine I will improve at it. I really want to leave behind something for others to see and grow from. Having Sharell do such a fantastic job with her Blog keeps me inspired.

Fora.tv

The world is thinking. Fora let's you hear talks and discussions just like TED on a plethora of topics. Often more political than TED, I come to fora when TED didn't do the trick for me.

January 25th 2011

Happy Birthday Ryan! Woop Woop!

Had a really great weekend; Randi and I went to sunset drive in Friday night and saw two movies for 7:00!

Trevor was nice enough to let me borrow his truck, so I threw my entire bed in the back and we watched both movies just like we would if we were at home except it was on a jumbo screen. The weather was perfect, not too cold, completely clear starry night, it was beautiful. We got popcorn and soda and we were able to throw it and boo and not have to clean it up after =P So there goes list item number 63 on my list. We even saw some bats flying around and had decent sound for the movie.

Saturday I went back to SB for Ryan's birthday and to see my family. All in all I had a great weekend.

January 20th 2011

What a week! It's the career fair I've been running around like crazy trying to get a good job for the summer this week. Here are some of the companies I talked to:

Apple
Cisco
Pepsi
Eaton
CRB
Weber Metals
Agilent Technologies
Parker Hannifin
Boeing

I made this while I was waiting for Randi to be done at the library the other night:
I used the laser cutter at work to cut out a stencil of an image I found online, then it's just a little spray paint and you have good old Albert! The inspiration for this portrait comes from my favorite artist Banksy, who is a London graffiti artist. You can check out his website here.

In other news . . . I'm a pizza chef! I made pizza with the pre made dough at Trader Joes, some tomoatoes, peppers, and chicken!

January 17th 2011

Posting again feels like seeing a relative you haven't seen in a while who you've missed. I'm going to try and keep up the posts even if they are not videos. Depending how long I stay at the library today I want to make a video though.

Here's something for you until then. It is a link to the audio of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream speech." Listen to the whole thing and realize the significance of today and the civil rights movement.

+1 because you didnt get a video.

Dogs vs Cats as pets

January 3rd 2011

Today was the first day of school and it was pretty uneventful. I'm taking:
  • IME 223 Process Improvement
  • STATS 321 Statistics for Engineers
  • IME 156 Electronics Manufacturing
  • EE 251 Electric Circuits Lab
  • IME 400 Independent Study Unit
I had Stats today and the teacher seems good. He wrote the book though and is all strict about us getting it. He didn't put one on course reserves in the library, my guess is he wants the royalties from sales. I'm headed to my process improvement lab right now and I'm really looking forward to it. After it, dinner with Trevor and fam!

No video for now, maybe later tonight if there's time. We're celebrating Trevor's birthday so probably not though!

Random internet picture of the day:
"One for the money, two for the show, three because I'm a boss."

QOTD: What's something you remember being taught from elementary school?

My answer: Don't make Uranus jokes in science class, they are not as funny as you think.

Later Days,

Robby

January 2nd 2011

Hey guys! So each video takes 3-5 hours to compile and upload and this one wasn't done before I wanted to sleep so it's getting uploaded today. Remember to share your opinions and ideas in the comments section below!
